Ms. Prateep Ungsongtham Hata: Chronology

1952- Born August the 9th in Klong Toey Slum, Bangkok.

1959- Began four years primary education, at the same time working as a vendor to help with school fees.

1963- Left school to work at firecracker factory and at the Bangkok Port, saved money from wages to continue education at evening classes.

1968- Opened an informal school in the slum, continuing her studies meanwhile.

1970-Awarded place at Suan Dusit, Bangkok's foremost teacher training college.

1976-The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) posted eviction notices on her home community and her school. Prateep pushed for a compromise solution, and the PAT made a new site available 1 km away. Authorities finally recognised her school. It was called "Pattana Village School" and Prateep was appointed principle. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration took over management of the school.
Prateep completed her education with a Diploma of Education from Suan Dusit Teachers College

1978-Received Magsaysay Award for Public Service. Used prize money to establish Duang Prateep Foundation, became foundation Secretary General

1979-Named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by Department of Education.

1980-Left full-time teaching in order to head the Duang Prateep Foundation.
Became first Asian citizen to receive John D. Rockefeller Youth Award for Outstanding Contribution to Mankind. With the prize money established the Foundation for Slum ChilCare.

1983-The PAT sought to relocate "Pattana Village Community". Prateep persuaded them to enter a land sharing agreement with the slum community and the National Housing Authority (NHA).

1985-In August, the entire Pattana Village Community (more than 3,000 people), the school, and the Foundation's headquarters moved to a new site.

1987-Married Mr. Tatsuya Hata, Director of Japan Sotoshu Relief Committee.

1988-Birth of son, Issara.

1989-Appointed adviser on urban policy to P.M.
Awarded an Honorary Masters Degree by Ramkhamhaeng University, Bangkok

1992-Became a committee member of the Confederation for Democracy and one of the leaders of the opposition to the military dictatorship of the time. Birth of second son, Tonklaa.

1993-Appointed to the Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Education for the Poor.

2000-Won a seat in Thailand's first ever elected Senate.

2004 Won the World’s Children’s Prize and the Global Friends’ Award
